At least then Davey has some options that have some past success and no big injury concerns.

Put it this way, if Derosa is the same guy as the last two years, who's the first hitter off the bench? At least Nix had some pop, and if he faced a RH, there was a decent chance. I'd think about Wilson Betemit, even.Wallynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9207681.post-14693952119234458562012-01-23T13:47:03.688-08:002012-01-23T13:47:03.688-08:00+1/2st - Matt Chico says "He'll take it!&...+1/2st - Matt Chico says "He'll take it!"

Wally / Dezo - I don't think it's singificantly better or worse than last year and I think last year I realized that (in the NL East at least) the Nats bench wasn't particularly terrible. The Nats, Marlins and Mets benches stank and Phillies wasn't good. It's just hard to get a good bench. Flores should be a good back-up catcher, Bernadina is a serviceable 4th OF, if they could get a decent power bat it'll be easier to accept whoever remains.Harperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07738813756060133236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9207681.post-9224246492228517192012-01-23T13:22:35.992-08:002012-01-23T13:22:35.992-08:00Flores will hit better and field worse that Rodrig...Flores will hit better and field worse that Rodriguez; whichever you prefer in a backup C determines if that's an improvement. He also won't tempt the manager to start him because of his "veteran leadership" and past glories, so that's a plus.

DeRosa plays a lot of positions and none of them very well. If he comes back from the injuries and hits like he did a few years back, he could be very useful--an upgrade on Nix, at least. If he doesn't, then he's probably worse that Hairston, something I really can't believe I just wrote.

Bernie is a useful fourth outfielder, if, again, management doesn't get deluded into thinking he can start. At this point, though, he looks like he might be the starter, unless we get someone (eventually Bryce, of course) who can play RF and move Werth over to CF permanently (which, if nothing else, would make even last year's hitting from Werth not suck so much...the question is, can he field the position, especially with Morse in LF not giving him much help).

Otherwise, I pray for Lombardozzi to get hot in spring training and steal the 2B job from Desmond, kicking Espi to SS. Or Desmond learning to walk, whichever.

I do think this year's bench is better in that it has some upside at least, while last year's bench basically had none (consider, eg., that Hairston basically overachieved with the line he put up). There's a chance that one or two of the guys we have now might perform surprisingly well.DezoPenguinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9207681.post-74440779064758621662012-01-23T13:02:51.394-08:002012-01-23T13:02:51.394-08:00I agree that the Gio deal was a little richer than...I agree that the Gio deal was a little richer than I expected, but the two team options could be extremely valuable, so I am ok with it. Morse - I might have given a little more (say, 2/$12m) in return for a team option for 2014 at $10m or so. But otherwise, hard to argue.

But how about this for a topic? Is this really our bench for 2012: Flores, Bernie, DeRosa, Lombo, + someone like Chad Tracy or Xavier Paul (assumes Cameron is the starting CF)? Yikes.

And is it really better than this (admittedly poor) 2011 bench? Pudge, Hairston, Nix, Cora, Stairs and Bernie (Ankiel starting CF).Wallynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9207681.post-16182483419110482402012-01-23T10:35:06.622-08:002012-01-23T10:35:06.622-08:00Every Nats pitcher gets a Tim Wakefield deal!

Pitching is just too hit and miss for all but the top guys and too injury prone even for most of them.

j/k, I think.Bryannoreply@blogger.com
