Game Thread!

Since we last talked nothing happend.  Well not nothing. The Mets have split two with the Braves which is ok. Keeps the Braves from pulling away.  Max broke his nose, which isn't good, but is not your typical injury that you have to worry about him being out a long while or try to compensate and create another injury elsewhere.  He may even pitch tonight (I'd personally hold him off until tomorrow but that's me). It's something to talk about and will make a great story if he goes out and pitches today but it's more symbolic than important.

Did you know Ian Desmond was good again? Well not good for the year but in his last 30+ games he's hitting .351 / .414 / .649. I knew Murphy would hit (he has but for 10 games fewer than Ian and he dug himself a deeper hole to start) but didn't see this coming. Good for Ian!

Have at it.

  1. I’d like to be the first to acknowledge Harpers strength and courage to go out there every few days with a post or comment that puts his credibility and reputation squarely at risk with this biding blogging community. Three cheers for Harper!!

  3. OK, I'll play - how is Cole Irvin not a National? He's gave up two homers in relief just now.

  4. Dozier could start to look like he's worth his contract by the all-star break. Not quite enough defense, but the power and patience look reasonable after this hot streak.

  5. I feel bad for Desmond. He was offered one of the highest contracts in MLB for a SS at the time. 7 years $107 million. He would have been up there with Tulowitzki. He'd have been a Nats homegrown star. Instead he "didn't want to hurt the potential earnings of future SS." Man these guys get bad advice sometimes. Bryce got bad advice from Boras. He should have known that none of the big players were going to go big to sign Harper. Instead, Boras and Harper spent the entire offseason with essentially one serious suitor. He got his highest paid player in the game salary for all of two weeks.

  6. If Desmond were willing to work as to change positions as he has in Denver, he easily could have stayed in DC. He was pretty bad in the OF and at 2B when Guzman still was the SS, but he seemed pretty comfortable on the team. I agree that he accepted the guilt trip line from the MLBPA and Boras rather than do what he wanted.

Now that we know Bryce essentially wanted a lifetime contract, I think there were going to be issues in getting top dollar per year. The trouble I have with his side of the story is that explanation seemed to conveniently come after the fact and wasn't something he expressed to the Nats directly as a point that could be further negotiated.

  7. I agree. I think for Bryce it was all about the $330. I think he wanted the highest annual salary if possible, but $330 was the primary number in his mind. He got it and Philly is booing him already.

  8. One down. Six to go. Corbin was excellent. Soto also good. Parra and Dozier stepped up (especially throwing out Harper). Bull pen acceptable. Really, the Nats looked to be the better team after 9 innings.

  9. Five to go. One game has already been postponed till September. Nats need to go 4-2 minimum.

honestly i think of bryce as a really sad case now. i mean, he seems to want it soooo bad...and he will never be remembered as anything other than a fairly good player. sorry, but there's a laundry list of players that have had one great season. sick of hearing "oh but 2015." Mike Trout has Harper's 2015 every year.

  11. Great, now everyone has figured out that Bryce isn't worth a $330M contract. So where are all those people who wrote 2,000 words telling us that Bryce was a future HOF and the Nats were making a mistake by not signing him. The silence is truly deafening.
Hey, Harper that statement also applies to you. So don't let me down. Write something that starts off that Bryce is only performing 23% worse than was expected and that justifies his $330M contract.

  12. Two games, two wins. Four to go. Max Scherzer contract looking to be a much bigger win than Harper's. Sweep of double header accomplished.

Give Davey credit for his management of the batting order. Parra and Robles both put in positions to succeed and they did.

Bull pen seems to have become a strength in the last month.

  13. I hate B Harper, but with only like 3% of his contracted playing time in the books, a bit early to celebrate his failed contract. Instead. Let's celebrate that he has not been a liability to the Nats this year.

  14. Not quite a Jordan "flu game," but not a bad "nose game" from Max.

  15. Followed game 1 yesterday, happy with the win.

Was at game 2 and . . . am disappointed that folks were booing Bryce Harper. Of course, it could have been a lot of Philly fans doing the booing, but there were a lot of Nats folks, too. Hey, the guy played here for many years, gave what he could, and made a personal/business decision to go up I-95. Whether he turns his game around, I wish him the best. ...and I've no idea if he is, or will be, worth $330m. Not my call.

Observation: Matt Adams has one helluva sweet swing. Up to now, I'd only seen it from up high or on TV. Seeing it from (almost) field level, it's a thing of beauty (even if he connected for outs).

  16. I bet Bryce earns his 11 million something dollars this season just by getting Phillie fannies in the seats to boo him. It's 2020 and beyond where the stupid money means he actually has to hit. The guy is always going to be streaky, but even now he's got 1.6 fWAR. His year might look like 2016 with fewer steals and better defense. It's not superstar stuff, but it's Werthian.

  17. Max f@cking Scherzer, you guys.

If I broke my nose I probably wouldn't go to work the next day. At my job where I sit in front of a computer.

  18. He's 26. It's crazy to think he isn't going to get better or have better seasons during his actual prime around 28-29. I thought they should have signed him. He'll have better years and earn most of that money. Rendon is really just coming into his own the last two years - age 28 and 29 season. Call the Harper signing a bust when he is 30 if he's still doing this. Not until then.

However, I also don't blame Nats fans for booing him. He said all of these things about loving DC. However, at the end of the day he went to the one place that made him the highest paid player in the game - $330 million. He could have gone to LA and signed for a much higher annual salary. He could have signed with SF and made similar money. Instead it was all about beating Stanton's total contract. That high mark lasted for 2 weeks until Mike Trout blew it out of the water. Then Bryce turned around and complained about the deferred money in the Nats 10 year $300 million offer. Bryce and Boras spent all winter hoping to drum up another suitor. When it was always only the Phillies. He sort of deserves to be booed.

Now if they let Rendon walk too....that would be crazy.
