If you didn't see Friday's post go back to it and throw in your two cents. We're all in this together (well unless you are in like rural Nevada - Contact looks nice) and if a little content everyday helps keep every a bit saner, well that's just the type of sacrifice I am willing to make.
First off something real simple for the Monday Quickie - what are you watching right now (or very recently passed) How do you spend the time when looking at your screens? It doesn't have to be good TV or movies, but if for some reason you watch things you hate don't mention those. If it's something streaming be sure to note the service because oddly enough not everyone pays for every streaming service like some dummies (well I don't have the Apple one).
So currently I'm watching
Better Call Saul (new episode tonight). It's on season 5, seasons 1-4 on Netflix.
Trapped - an Icelandic police show streaming on Amazon Prime. It's mostly in Icelandic (they speak English when talking to people from other places) so you have to read subtitles which is good if you want to put down your screens for an hour.
McMillions - HBO doc about people cheating the McDonald's Millionaire game. Like for every big prize.
Will finish up Bletchey Circle - British mini-series about crime solving former code cracking WWII woimen - on PBS but I'm not sure it's streaming anywhere. It wasn't before it came on here.
Is that it? That might be it. With a baby free time is basically 9 on and it's a lot more vegging out than actively watching. Shows to veg out on
A lot of HGTV - part of the reason is when you have kids, HGTV is one of the few channels you can put the TV on and be sure you aren't going to put on something you don't want them to see or hear. But mostly because it's easy background noise when you aren't really paying attention to something. An hour to update a house? Yeah I don't need to see all that - I'll look at the beginning and then at the end.
Forged in Fire - I don't know why but even though every episode is basically the same there is something magical about turning metal into a blade then testing it against a bunch of object
Reruns of the Office - again easy background noise . And always on. Drunk History, when that is on.
I'm sure there's more. Since I didn't get to movies, let's stick with series for now.
Thanks for doing this, Harper. Not having baseball really adds to the anxiety, for me anyway. Listening to Charlie and Dave, and the sound of the crowd, always gives me a sense of calm. Also it's silly but my favorite part of the game is when they do other scores from around the league. Baseball is its own self-contained little universe where the only News you need to hear is how other teams are doing, and the only thing to fear is that your team will lose.
ReplyDeleteSuccession is great. Can't wait for that to come back. Tom Wamsgams is everything.
NBCSW ran the Nats' victory parade yesterday afternoon, so that was fun. I have the World Series DVDs and may pop thos in from time to time. I do think this would be an opportunity for the sports networks to run more "classic" games - back in the day I would see the Mason-UConn 2006 pop up, or the original Strasmas, and I would almost always sit down and watch the whole thing.
ReplyDeletePBS is streaming the Ken Burns Baseball documentary for free right now: https://www.pbs.org/show/baseball/
Series-wise: Russian Doll, Ugly Delicious, The Imagineering Story. May try to take in a bunch of the Marvel movies that I haven't seen yet. I want to pick up Schitt's Creek and Love Death & Robots as time allows. And of course I recommend Bojack Horseman.
Totally agree with Carl, and that actually would be a great idea for a post: What are the greatest/most significant April baseball games of the modern era (i.e. somebody hits three homers on opening day; no-hitters/perfect games; debuts of future Hall-of-Famers) that should be rebroadcast during the MLB hiatus?!?
ReplyDeleteHBO: The new season of Westworld started off pretty good last night. And my wife and I are still wrapping up Watchmen. And actually, we're still only halfway through When They See Us because it is really really hard to watch, but it's also excellent and obviously important. Barry and Succession are between seasons, but great. Also, I'd say the Wire, Deadwood and the Sopranos are pretty evergreen. In fact the slightly weaker moments of each bothered me less on recent re-watches over the last few years than they did on the first viewing 10-20 years ago.
ReplyDeleteNetflix: We're a couple seasons behind on Better Call Saul, and really looking forward to continuing it. In terms of other series showing on Netflix, I'd recommend Bojack Horseman, Broadchurch, Extras, and Breaking Bad. And, while they're not quite as good as that set, Russian Dolls and Flowers were definitely worth watching too.
Amazon Prime: We're not in the middle of anything, but Fleabag and Bosch are both excellent shows that recently had new seasons. Reaching further back, the Night Manager, the Americans and Mr Robot are all worth watching.
Hulu has Atlanta, Party Down and You're the Worst, though you'll probably have to suffer commercials there, so I'd recommending looking through your cable subscription first (if you have one).
This was a great idea, Harper. I can't wait to see all the shows the group recommends. We're always looking for more high quality content.
About to start Season 2 of Kingdom on Netflix. It is a Korean (subtitled) period drama (late 1500s) about political conspiracy & a mysterious plague (Zombies).
ReplyDeleteTrying to go to the grocery store kinda feels like some of the action sequences.
Thanks Harper! This is great info. We are watching and like:
ReplyDeleteBosch- Amazon Prime
Watchmen- Prime
Westworld- HBO
Witcher- Netflix
Lost in Space- Netflix
Problem is we have seen all the series and episodes of all the above. I think Westworld just started aired a new season and new Bosch episodes are available in a couple of weeks.
Ditto on Better Call Saul. Hulu's also got Silicon Valley (funny) and Fargo (the series), both good.
ReplyDeleteAlso recommend the Taylor Swift documentary on Netflix - simply compelling. Okay, but I am serious about the other ones :)
I hardly ever watch TV, but my wife is a huge Star Wars fan and we've been working through The Clone Wars with my kid, who is pretty well SW obsessed these days. The early seasons 1-3 are kinda rough going, and it was to our advantage to pull up guides on which episodes to skip, but 4 onward have been pretty fun. Wouldn't recommend to the average viewer or to a viewer without kids at home, but if you like Star Wars and haven't checked the series out yet, take advantage of the down time. It's a little Pixar-y, in that it's for kids but quite parent friendly.
ReplyDeleteOn Disney+, cause we love giving our money to that money pit.
Starting to rewatch my Blu ray collection of the Sopranos - probably the GOAT of television series - simply fantastic even though I've seen them countless times!!
ReplyDeleteJust watched the movie Upgrade - decent and Ad Astra - terrible - very slow moving!!!
