Nationals Baseball: One win away

One win away

From not losing 100.

First of the modest goals for 2024 specifically. I'd say

  • Don't lose 100 games
  • Don't be worst team in league (not guaranteed yet but it would take quite the collapse)
  • Don't be worst team in NL East (also need collapse)
  • Win 70 games (should also happen)
  • Win 72 games (that's more than last year. It is also their pace so it could go either way)
  • Win 80 games (probably about as likely as being the worst team in league)

I was thinking we were pretty much a lock to equal or better last year’s win total…. Now, ehhhh

You took 8 days to come up with that?!

So, basically don't suck too bad

Hey, at least they've locked up "don't be the worst team in MLB." If the amazing White Sox win out (not looking likely) they will finish 53-109. If the Nats "lose out" they would finish nine games ahead (62-100)! It's insane just how bad the White Sox have been. Not only are they #30 in MLB, they are twenty games behind the #29 team (Rockies, 52-89). Add 20 wins to the Rockies' record and that would put them a half game ahead of the Cardinals (71-69) and make them 15th in MLB.

It’s also insane we lost a series to the white Sox 🫠

It was originally a 10 page opus and I just kept editing and editing.

Didn't even consider all of baseball as a goal - was thinking NL - but yeah locked that up August 28th when they beat the Yankees to guarantee a 61-101 finish or better while the White Sox were sitting with 102 losses

@Sherriff It's not that surprising, really. It's in the "it's not just who you play, it's when you play them" category. The Nats played the White Sox when they were in the middle of their only decent stretch of the season so far, an 8-4 stretch that included taking a series from the Cardinals in St. Louis and 3 of 4 from the first place Guardians (!). Outside of that stretch, the White Sox are 24-107. A .183 pace which over 162 games would be just under 30-132.

That is true.. I do remember at the time going into the series thinking the white Sox were bad but not THAT bad. Now we know they really are THAT bad.

Patrick Corbin is back -- but not in a good way. Does anyone think he'll get a (minor league) contract for next year?

Hey Harper - the Nats' DH sweep yesterday pushed them to 64 wins. No 100 loss season this year! They're back on a pace for 72-73 wins. But with only 19 games remaining they'll have to go 7-12 to match last season's record. Given their remaining schedule of 15 games vs. teams over .500 (2 vs. Atlanta, 3 vs. Mets, 4 vs. Cubs, 3 vs. Royals, 3 vs. Phillies) there's certainly no guarantee that they get there.

I mean, that’s almost Cleveland Spiders level. And that only happened because the owners sabotaged the team.
