I had a column in my head about the CHuBOUVs associated with Jayson Werth but you'll have to wait for that. Instead the Nats get swept and PANIC!
Ok nobody's panicking which is good because there's no reason to right now. Granted the team on last Monday that I liked to go wire to wire now has lost Werth and Strasburg for a lot and a little time respectively, but they are still better than the Mets. Yes. Still are. But the gap is shrinking.
Which is why Anthony Rendon's return becomes utterly important. Will it be this week? He played Friday and Saturday but not Sunday both at second base. Seems likely we'll see him.
Anyway WORK! Out

The offense is not very good right now and the bullpen is AAA-level (outside of Storen and Thornton). Nothing to panic about, but the latter one especially (pen) isn't changing unless Rizzo makes some real moves (not just internal junk exchanges). Barrett is really awful....
Didn't Rendon DH Sunday? I mean, granted that means he didn't really "play baseball" per se...
Lots of bad luck the past few games, but man they sure looked like a team on getaway-day yesterday. Did no one other than Ray Knight think that it might be a good idea to make that joker throw a strike? The Jays pitching is a mess so this could be an interesting series.
@Wired, Barrett is dirty when he's on, he's just not on too much of the time. Still has one of the best sliders in the game. I'm rooting for him to pull it together
On another note, WHY IS RENDON AT 2ND?!?!
Rendon at 2nd is totally freaking me out. 3rd base may not guarantee he does not get injured, but at least he doesn't have to turn double plays with people taking out his legs.
CHuBOUVs? Is that anything like kale?
Ray Knight For Manager! Or at least for Permanent FP Replacement.
Bad plate discipline by almost every hitter in the lineup... another mediocre pitcher is made to look like Cy Young. They reverted back to early season form with all the runners left on base, and not working counts effectively. Argh. Not panic, just Argh.
JE34... we must duel now. You have besmirtched the honor of JP and this will not stand! Seriously prefer Ray Knight to FP? Carpenter plays the grumpy old man well, we don't need TWO of them in the booth!
What is CHuBOUVs?
Although FP is likable, Nats TV commentators tend to be "homers". Ray Knight was a breath of fresh air. Part of the fun of baseball is the critique of both what they do well, and what they need to do better.
@Z11 - I'll take Ray Knight over FP 10 times outa 10, although I'd much rather have someone with slightly "newer" thinking alongside Bob Carpenter anyway. It physically pains me when I hear FP say that some pitchers just "know how to collect wins" because they're more determined or have a specific demeanor.
And yea wtf is CHuBOUVs?
I was actually pleasantly surprised with ray knight in the booth. He had a lot more relevant and interesting things to say than FP, even if he occasionally said heinously moronic things.
FP just feels seems benignly stupid.
Ray is much smoother when describing players than FP, though:
"If you look at him, very strong around the thigh, the uhh...butt, upper torso. Thick, tight guy with outstanding leg strength. Works hard ALL the time." -on Roark
The part I hate most about FP is that he makes the same stupid joke over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over.
Every single farm report is "call him up, he's ready"
Every Fanday promo he jokes about them looking down at it approvingly
There are definitely more irritating ones and I can't believe I can't recall any off the top of my head. But he seriously NEVER lets a joke die, even if it was DOA
Does anyone else think Bob Carpenter is too mickey mouse of a play-by-play guy? He sounds more like a game show host than anything else. Every time we score a run, its "....AND the NATS...take 3-2 lead..."
Maybe I'm just watching this team too much lol
FP doesn't bother me so much. I like how enthusiastic he is. I think being a TV commentator is tough because you have to fill so much airtime, and you're mostly unnecessary since the viewer can see what's happening. FP does a pretty good job of explaining some of the details about small plays that were more difficult than they look, talking about pitch sequences, or what the players might be thinking to explain what they do. He's a bit of a homer, and I wish he would be more keen to point out the negatives, but overall I like his excitement and the fact that he at least tries to be educational. He still thinks like a player, and not necessarily an analyst, but as long as you know that, he's tolerable.
Ray Knight is so awkward. I think having him in the booth full time would be amusing, but for the wrong reasons. I like him because you never really know what kooky thing he's going to say, and in the most awkward way. But I think he would get himself fired pretty quick.
Like most Nats fans, I'm a big fan of Charlie and Dave. But then radio is a bit easier, I think, because if you can't think of anything to say, you can just describe what's happening, since the listeners can't see it.
I think Charlie and Dave are just smarter than Bob and F.P. They are more analytical and seem to understand the nuances of plays and decisions better than the tv guys.
I used to like FP, but he has gotten more and more inane with every game. Being a grumpy old man, I was ready with my Amens while Ray Knight was (a) totally dogging the Reds starter as the scrub he is and (b) condemning the horrible plate discipline of the Nats hitters. Ray was clumsy as hell but he generally had substance. FP is more smooth verbally but is becoming more of a clown.
Bob Carpenter does nothing for me... familiarity is breeding contempt there, especially with, "nnnnnNNNNNAtionals baseball is brought to you by..." and "ttttTTTHHHIS broadcast of Nationals baseball..." Annoying, Bob. Stop it.
By sharp contrast, I could easily listen to Charlie and Dave read the phone book and spell names all night.
What are the chances MASN can do a simulcast with Charlie and Dave? The Dodgers do it when they have Vin Scully on the radio and TV calling games
I definitely agree that I like FP less than I used to. I really liked him at first, and his commentary is getting more inane, and repetitive. I just don't have any visceral reaction to him. He still seems to have that wide-eyed kid amazement at the whole baseball scene, which I kind of like.
I would almost consider getting cable for a C&D simulcast.
I like Bob and FP well enough, but Charlie and Dave are much more fun to listen to. A simulcast would be great.
Maybe I'm a pessimist. I see them being caught by both the Mets and maybe even the Braves at this point. Hope I'm wrong.
Can I say how happy I am I can write basically nothing and you guys can turn the comments into something (in this case a broadcaster discussion) Wooo! I'm uneceesary. Time to bot up and a float on a raft down the Missouri.
You'll have to guess on CHuBOUVs as it's an acronym I made up on Friday.
i live overseas, and watch the games that I can through MLB.com. The service has its annoyances, but one great thing that it does allow is a realtime video streaming with an audio overlay of the radio announcers. I love listening to Charlie and Dave. they are truly very, very good broadcasters.
But that said, dont put me down in the book as against Bob and FP. i watch a lot of sad sack regional broadcasts. In my opinion, Bob and FP rate pretty high on the broadcasting scale. they have a lot of energy, a good chemistry, and speak smoothly. I think a very good job. That they aren't quite in Charlie and Dave's league is really no slight on their skills.
On the series: Kind of an ugly sweep, and the injuries are mounting. BUT, still in first, Rendon seems to be coming back (for the brief period until he is reinjured and his career destroyed for the sake of Yunel Escobar), and seriously, you can't win *every* series. There are going to be some duds. If Ray Knight noticed the plate discipline, then presumably Matt Williams noticed it, and will make some suggestions for corrections.
Apparently Rendon was playing catch on the field today before the rains hit...I think he just played three games straight, the last one being yesterday. If so, and if he's with the team today, my guess is he's activated tomorrow, as I believe they typically give one last day off after a string of consecutive rehab games just to be sure all is well.
Scratch that:
"Mark Zuckerman ✔ @ZuckermanCSN
Rendon here today, did early work. Going back to Harrisburg tomorrow to resume rehab."
Anybody know when we get Trea Turner from San Diego?
Another MLB.com subscriber. I agree with how much worse off some of the other teams are with their regional broadcasts (Ron Darling, I'm talking about you). When you aren't emotionally invested in the team, you hear more clearly the quality of the announcing. I will never forgive Angelos for sacking Jon Miller (for being too honest??) and since I was a kid, have loved listening to Vin Scully sing the praises for Farmer John's pure pork sausage!
I think June 21 or thereabouts?
I think June 21 or thereabouts?
I agree the Mets team is HORRIBLE. I'm looking at you, Keith Hernandez... Agree I like Charlie n Dave when I'm using my Sirius radio in the car to listen to the games. I'll also stipulate that I'm a total homer, and love FP because Expos.
Ray Knight is a MET! BOOOO!!!!
Did someone actually try to make the argument that Ray Knight isn't a homer? Every time the Nats lose, the man looks like he's knotting a noose under the desk and getting ready to hang himself. He also constantly uses the "we" that I can't stand. On the other hand, I recall FP saying when he was first hired that he learned from a broadcasting mentor that he's not out there, he's in the booth with a tie and make-up on. It's not "we", it's them, and he's really done a good job of keeping it that way. I agree he tends to only talk about the positive stuff, but I think that's more attitude than homerism. He rarely says anything negative about the other team, either. I think he's just a positive guy. And if you've seen his wife, you know why.
I actually know a few people who know FP, and the general consensus is that he's a cool guy.
We will need to work together to decipher CHuBOUVs, people...

I usually like FP, and for the most part I can tolerate Bob. As with Kenny B, FP's childlike enthusiasm for all facets of the game is pretty enjoyable most of the time, and I actually enjoy/don't mind his awkward dad jokes. Obviously C&D are the best, though.

Aw man, my post didn't go through last night.
Cingrani Harper "unintentional" Beaning O? U? Votto.
Nothing to do with Werth, though.
Oh, I forgot the "s"

But, he doesn't, though. He might be a jerk...maybe.
So, really, I got nothing ;)
the secret is in the lowercase U, its just gotta be...

Also, I'm late to the conversation, but I want to add my vote to the "FP is awesome" side. Yeah, he says some pretty inane stuff and Charlie and Dave are the better commentators, but c'mon. You just have to love a guy who, day in and day out, is so absolutely psyched about his job. His love for all things baseball is constantly palpable.
Random question, but thinking about commentators/broadcasts/etc., has the whole dispute between the Orioles and the Nationals been resolved? I thought I saw something on ESPN about there being a ruling a couple weeks ago, but I couldn't tell if that actually resolved the issue. Either way, just wondering when Lerner is going to start shelling out more of the big bucks to bring the WS to DC.
As for CHuBOUVs: Contract Haters unless Brings Over Underappreciated Veterans... no idea...
Last update I heard was that MLB arbitration had ruled in our favor (Orioles/MASN need to pay us another $300 million over the life of the remaining contract) but the Orioles filed an injunction in NY Court (district? circuit?) to stay the ruling and have it evaluated by the Feds. Doesn't look like a decision has been rendered yet for that:

GAHHHH... activate Jayson Werth to TAKE A FEW PITCHES, for crying out loud.
Lucas Giolito can't get here quickly enough, or Fister can't get healthy quickly enough, or Strasburg's exorcism can't be completed quickly enough... The Nats really aren't going anywhere if they have to rely on either AJ Cole or Taylor Jordan as a starter... And where did the bats go? It seems like since the news that Werth was out until August, the bats have been put into a deep freeze... Good thing the Mets still stink...
Didn't someone ritualistically sacrifice Taylor Jordan after he gave HR #'s 499 and 500 to Albert Pujols in the same game? That's how the Nats made the playoffs last year, I thought.... Why is he still pitching in the majors? What is this?????
If Harper doesn't let us know what CHuBOUVs means in the next 24 hours I'm going AWOL on this thread.
The suspense is eating at me...
I hope our gracious host hasn't also gone on the DL. Carpal tunnel, maybe? Maybe he needs to do a side session by tormenting Boz as a Washington Post online commenter.
I think he made an emergency trip to the Nats clubhouse to remind them that Mark Buehrle was only kind of good like 5 years ago, and that it is OK to take a few pitches every now and then.
"it is OK to take a few pitches every now and then."
Heh. Stretches like this lead me to crazy flights of fancy, like, "maybe the Nats are just unwriting the book on their hitting patterns!"
"I hope our gracious host hasn't also gone on the DL. Carpal tunnel, maybe?"
He went to get it checked out by one of the Nats' doctors, who told him he needed about two hours of rest. They eventually extended that to six hours, then a day. On last update, Harper can't blog until sometime in September.
Harper is fine. He's seeing how many comments this will get.
LOLz abound!
Seriously where is our soulless automaton? I need to hear that the Nats aren't the league leaders in swinging at pitches outside the strike zone... and that other teams make mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young... and other teams' #2 hitters have zero plate discipline and horrendous batting eyes. Talk me down, Harper!
The league's best hitters are completely comfortable with 2 strikes on them. They change their approach, shorten up, and make pitchers miserable by staying alive, getting a piece, forcing them to throw more pitches... and then they pounce on mistakes. (Jayson "CHuBOUV" Werth in his prime is a great example of this.) The Nats have exactly one hitter doing anything close to that right now. Is there a coaching staff in the house?
Looks like Rendon just got reinstated...hope I get to see him tonight!
Don't worry, Rendon will go down with an inflamed ingrown toenail and be out for 6 weeks, don't get too excited
