Monday Quickie - Well that was fun

After a dreary road trip where the Nats looked like they'd compete with the dregs they needed a pick me up and who better to give a team one than the Mets. Yes they had the best record in baseball but the Mets are still the Mets and they played like classic Mets.  A couple of late game meltdowns and the "stay in it" Nats good enough to take advantage.

One game left in the series, finish it off.

Blew some, got lucky in a few, on 75-win pace. About what it should be all in. But yes, being competitive with the Mets in these games despite the colossal difference in payroll is super fun.

Just a bit more than fun? Maybe some trends emerging?

The real Dylan Crews is showing up.

Soto trade for Abrams, Gore and Wood beginning to bear fruit.

Parker is not an ace but a solid #3 is okay.

Bullpen may have some hope. Maybe.

Yeah. Super fun. I love it when the team comes back to win a game I had written off. It feels like two wins - the first when they make a game of it and then again when they actually win.

And It's been great watching Crews on a roll. Now, his true talent at this point in his career is very likely not quite at the level we've seen the past couple weeks, but watching the random walk undo a lot of its damage has been extremely enjoyable.

When we were talking about him a week or so ago, he was the 2nd most unlucky hitter in the majors by wOBA - xwOBA. It was something bonkers like .120. That difference is down to .050, which is still decently unlucky but it's a normal amount of bad luck, just 42nd worst in the majors.

And with Sasaki also starting so slow, Crews might be back in pole position for ROY.

I can't figure out how I feel about this team yet. Clearly the bullpen is a mess, but Crews is coming around, Gore and Co. are doing their jobs, and there aren't really any gaping holes in the lineup. I'd love to see Ruiz get back into 2022/23 form, and Young might be showing that last year's offensive "burst" was a fluke, but overall the team seems that they are starting to come together.

Now I just hope that they continue to progress throughout the season. Show Rizzo what we've got so next offseason they can make some actual moves. In the meantime, just going to enjoy the roller coaster of emotions watching this team gives me

Is this the worst bullpen the Nats have ever had? I think this is the worst bullpen the Nats have ever had.

Can we keep Rizzo as general manager but hire someone specifically to set up the bullpen during the offseason? It's clearly his kryptonite

Maybe see if Doo wants to take over that job!

I can think of no one better.....and he's already part of the team.
