Nationals Baseball: Pitchers AND catchers?

Pitchers AND catchers?

Sometimes we're grown-ups and sometimes we're kids.  Pitchers and Catchers is totally a little kid thing to get excited about.  It's like when they turn the calendar over to December, see the 25th sitting there, and start screaming "It's almost Christmas!" while running around the house. That's cute, right?

Of course pitchers and catchers turns into Spring Training which is the equivalent to the same kid, 90 minutes later, still running around and screaming.  Worse, when you tell them to calm down they scream  "IIII caaaaan't stoppppp myselffffff!!!!" while bouncing from couch to couch. Yes you can, dammit.

Nats fans are waiting on two things right now. Is Gio going to be punished in some way for his association with that Florida clinic?  Does Danny Espinosa look healthy? That's about it. Everything else is either better left to when the season begins, or mostly inconsequential.

Of course, it's up to you how much of this you want to absorb.  Maybe you love it, and to each his own. I'll just be writing the same random stuff until the off-season becomes the in-season.

The timing of this post was a coincidence to me. I just came from Zuckerman's site, and was thinking, who the F reads this overarching storyline fluff and/or gives a crap about it?!? It seems like it would be well-received by a different (read: older) generation. I wonder if there will be as much of that stuff in 20 more years.

Who the F would spend one moment of their life being angry to the point of excessive punctuation over the wondering at things that brings joy to others?

It is the province of internet message boards, is it not, to provide a location for the lowest amongst us to wave their superiority about and dot it with exclamation points.

"Pitchers and catchers report" are magic words to some. A gift. One might even say a balm against the literal and figurative cold of the long winter. Yay says I, one of those "read: older" folk who are made to feel young by their mere utterance.

Anon #1 - I think you and I agree on how much we want to read something like this, but let's not begrudge others. As long as they aren't drawing silly conclusions based on Spring Training stats (which some will) or acting like the last guy on the bench is the make or break decision for the team, they aren't hurting anything.

And I think there will always be an audience for this stuff. Hell I think we get far more info now than 20 years ago. Part of it is filling the beast that sports news has become but people must like it.

Anon #2 - "Angry to the point of excessive punctutation" is just the way the internet works. Hell, he went ahead and said "F" instead of spelling it out. That's downright gentlemanly.

I'm just happy we aren't discussing the impact the Langerhans will be having on the team this year.

anon #1 here - i also thought it was gentlemanly of me to post the comment on harper's site as opposed to leaving it on Zuckermans. And dont get me wrong, Mark's site occasionally has some value, too.

What's your take on Gio playing in the WBC? Is this a calculated move to endear himself with MLB so they don't sanction him? I wonder if Joe Torre called him up and said if he plays, it would go a long way toward the MLB leaving him alone.

Alternatively, I think the WBC uses a tougher drug-testing standard (Olympic version) than MLB. Maybe Gio is thinking if he passes that, it will show he isn't on PEDs.

Or maybe he just wants to focus on something else and is concerned about a media circus down in Viera. Does he have to report to spring training now?

Donald,
Or, maybe Gio isn't guilty of anything and or maybe it wasn't him at all and it turns out this guy Bosch is a whack job who knew if he just made out a list and put some names on it he could divert some attention away from his normal scummy activities.

...or maybe baseball players are really stupid. A-Rod in particular.

I'm glad about Pitchers and Catchers showing up. Beats reading all these 0bama nonsense links on the Nationals ESPN team page. What's up wit dat?

Froggy- Seconded. I'd give five bucks to go a day without seeing our president's last name or hearing about politics once.

Anyone know how involved Ramos is at this point?

And thank God for turning over the calendar and seeing its December --- or in this case almost March.

Come on Harper. Anticipation is a fine thing. It's your metaphor --- but just looking at the Xmas tree and the gifts underneath is part of the whole thing.

Nats have a nice Xmas tree. So we have to look at the presents for a few weeks before they get unwrapped. It is, almost, baseball season. HOORAY!

NA - Actually that's a good idea for a column....hmmm the answer is none! Short post!

Anon #1 - I think Mark and Adam (and Amanda) do very good jobs covering the team day to day. It's just a different job than being a columnist (which is more in line with what bloggers like myself do)

Donald - I can't imagine he thinks #1 or that #2 will matter to anyone (it won't) so maybe a little bit of #3? Is it a pretty good sign? I guess, but really Joe needs pitching bad for that team.

Z11 - that actually came around again to be non-excessive.

Froggy - I doubt you jus toss in one non-user in a book for no reason and expect that to tover you.

I think the Obama links is because of how that thing is aggregated. Looking for keywords like "national"

BLW - moving out of the DC area would help alot I bet. Ramos is cleared... but his status is still foggy. I wouldn't expect a lot from him this Spring.

ND - I got no problem with anticipation. Look at those presents! Get excited! But I'd prefer if there weren't beat guys out there telling me nonsense like "Does the wrapping paper effect the present on the inside"
