Bell is back!
Quick thoughts - uh oh.
This means to me the Nats aren't serious about making the playoffs next year which really I think they should be. They could surprise me with a big FA starter and some solid relief pick-ups but this really seems like the end of the batting pick-ups and I can't see thing being enough to make the line-up good. It can be, the kids can do things, but you can't expect it to be better than average and that's a stretch.
Bell is average and getting worse. All the fancy stats are in decline and he's at the age where that can happen. If the Nats get an average season from him they should feel happy. Better bet is he's worse this year and the Nats DH woes continue.

I am shocked - shocked. J/, learners just a rays/marlins type owner budgeting Pennys Saw this when they started closing several of the food and beer locations especially in my section (never seen such a thing) on weekday games the year after the won the World Series. Ugh
You mean the COVID shortened season?
I'm not excited or upset by this move. I would bet that Bell will be an average hitter. Sadly, that's an upgrade for the Nats. I think the FA this year are likely to end up being a bunch of underperforming contracts. Santander scares me. I don't hate Alonso, but his contract could be a problem. There simply weren't that many DH types that I'd rather have: Teoscar, Pederson, Turner. Who else?
Vladdy/Gallen 2026!
I don't hate this move. Lowe/Bell is a slight upgrade over Yepez/Chaparro and it's cheap. I'd rather 1/6 for Bell than overpay for Alonso or even the 2/37 Pederson got. It does signal that the Nats are doing the "see which vet hits and trade for stuff" approach for another year but the vet bets are better this year and Candelario brought back Herz.
Bigger picture: Aren't people complaining that the Nats don't extend or sign any of their stars before/when they hit FA? Wouldn't this short/cheap approach increase the chances of keeping Wood/Crews? The Lerners are cheap billionaires (LOL, what a world) so maybe it doesn't matter but it's probably easier to offer insane $ to those guys if they're not paying Alonso/the ghosts of Scherzer and Corbin (who are getting ~$25M this year btw)
IMO it’s a rather big upgrade over yepez/chapparo. Even if bell is only slightly better than the DH last year, Lowe is a rather significant upgrade at 1b over either of them.
